Giota Thanos, a central figure in Orlando's community and the heart of Omega Deli, passed away on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the age of 80. Her passing followed a courageous battle, though her time was considered far too short. Giota leaves behind memories, a legacy, and an extraordinary impact on countless lives that will be felt for generations.

Born in Rafti, Greece, Giota was the third of five children to Yianni and Eleni. At 18, she journeyed to America, where she met Spiro Thanos, the love of her life. They built a life together rooted in love, laughter, hard work, and family. Spiro preceded her in death on December 6, 2020.

Giota and Spiro were blessed with four children: Maria, Dino, Athena, and Peneo. Raising three young children with limited English was a significant challenge, with Giota often recalling, “When the babies cried, I cried!” Her work ethic was extraordinary, and she possessed seemingly endless energy. She worked alongside her sister in a bridal shop before transitioning to a hospital, where her dedication earned her repeated Employee of the Month honors and ultimately Employee of the Year.

In October 1988, Giota and Spiro moved their family to Orlando, Florida, leaving their extended family to pursue a new opportunity. It was in Orlando that Omega Deli became far more than a family restaurant; it grew into an Orlando institution, a gathering place, and, for many, a second home. For decades, Giota was the heart and soul of Omega Deli, welcoming people from every walk of life. She had a unique ability to turn customers into friends and friends into family, ensuring no one ever left hungry and rarely empty-handed. Her generosity was endless, and her unforgettable personality made Omega feel like home.

Giota was described as a force of nature—funny, quick-witted, outspoken, and fiercely loving. She was known for her one-liners and her directness, never hesitating to share her thoughts. Her advice was honest, her humor legendary, and her heart enormous. She possessed a strength and work ethic that seemed almost superhuman, remaining a constant presence at Omega Deli until just six weeks before her passing, even at 80 years old.

Walking was one of Giota’s greatest pleasures. She walked everywhere, not solely for exercise, but because she enjoyed being among people. A stroll through the neighborhood was always an opportunity to stop, talk, laugh, and connect. While she participated in numerous 5K events, it was these everyday walks, greeting familiar faces and making new friends, that truly reflected her spirit.

Above all, Giota’s greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted wife, a loving mother, and a proud Yia Yia to her two granddaughters, Elena and Emma. She was also a sister to Demetri, Venetia, Dora, and Spiro. Her love extended far beyond her immediate family; to many, she was simply “Mom,” a source of guidance, encouragement, honesty, and unconditional kindness. Since her passing, a common question among those she touched has been, “Who is going to give me advice now?”

Together, Giota and Spiro were described as true icons, role models, and heroes to those who knew them. They built a legacy of love, generosity, resilience, and community. Though 80 years was considered “simply not enough,” her unmistakable voice, laughter, endless one-liners, honest advice, and comforting presence will be missed. Her extraordinary spirit will live on in every life she touched.
